LERT Chainsaw: Fundamentals

This course introduces practical chainsaw fundamentals for LERT volunteers, from choosing and maintaining a saw to preparing for fieldwork and avoiding unsafe operating practices. Participants will review LERT chainsaw culture and job-site expectations, saw selection, fuel and sharpening basics, chain and bar maintenance, pole saw use, deployment-ready tools and the personal limits that support safe service.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

• Explain key LERT chainsaw guidelines for training, teamwork, paperwork, work scope and volunteer conduct
• Select a chainsaw and fuel approach appropriate for the operator, equipment and expected work
• Recognize when a chain needs sharpening and maintain cutters and depth gauges correctly
• Remove, reinstall, tension and maintain chains and guide bars using the procedures demonstrated in the course
• Use a pole saw from a stable position and recognize hazards associated with elevated cutting
• Prepare a practical ready kit with fuel, bar oil, PPE, sharpening tools, spare parts and personal field tools
• Identify unsafe chainsaw practices and apply the course principles of working together, maintaining equipment and respecting limits
