LERT Chainsaw: Knots, Straps and Tiedowns

This course equips LERT volunteers with practical knowledge for using knots, straps, chains, anchors, and trailers safely in disaster response operations. Participants will learn how to select and use appropriate knots and tie-down equipment, inspect gear before use, build safer anchors, and reduce risk when pulling, securing, transporting, or towing equipment in the field.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Explain why proper knots, tie-downs, anchors, and trailer practices matter in LERT operations
  • Select appropriate knots for common pulling, connecting, and anchoring tasks
  • Tie, dress, set, inspect, and lightly load knots before use
  • Recognize safe and unsafe uses of straps, chains, binders, carabiners, slings, and anchor points
  • Inspect straps, chains, hardware, trailers, and loads before and during travel
  • Apply safe practices when towing trailers and transporting LERT equipment
